Appliance Answers is an independent UK guide for people who want to look after their own washing machine, dishwasher, oven, fridge and tumble dryer — and fix the smell, the grit or the grime before paying for a call-out or a replacement. We cover the problems households actually search for: why the washing machine smells and how to clean it properly, why the dishwasher leaves a film on glasses, how to get baked-on grease off oven racks, why a fridge still smells after cleaning, and why a tumble dryer takes two cycles.

Search any of those and nearly every answer is written by someone selling something — a manufacturer, a retailer, a warranty plan or a cleaning-product brand. Plenty of that advice is sound. Plenty of it also ends with a product you did not need, or a service booking for a job a filter brush would have solved. That is the gap this site exists to fill.

How We Work

We are not appliance engineers, and we do not claim to have personally tested every machine or cleaner we write about. What we do is read manufacturers’ own guidance properly, check it against UK safety-body advice, and look at what owners consistently report in real discussion threads. Where the evidence points one way, we say so. Where people genuinely disagree — does vinegar belong in a dishwasher, does a cleaner tablet do anything a hot wash does not — we weigh it and tell you which way we would lean.

Our position, in one line: clean the part nobody cleans first, question the cleaner, know where the engineer starts. Most smelly or underperforming machines need a filter, a seal or a spray arm cleaned, not replacing.

What that looks like in practice:

  • The cheapest genuine check first, not the most expensive product
  • The mechanism in a sentence, so you can judge the advice for yourself
  • A plain note when a product or a seller’s advice is oversold
  • UK conditions — hard water, utility rooms, UK prices
  • Honest about the limits — we tell you when it is really an engineer’s job

What We Won’t Do

  • No repair advice beyond user-accessible cleaning and basic checks. We never suggest opening panels, touching wiring, heating elements or gas components, or replacing pumps. Those are jobs for a qualified engineer, and we say so.
  • No invented tests. We do not publish “we tested 12 cleaners” results or fabricated before-and-after comparisons.
  • No fabricated testimonials. We never invent personal-use stories, engineer quotes or reader letters. Owner experience is attributed to where it came from.
